USD 407 Starting a Preschool Class

USD 407 LogoStarting with the fall 2020 semester, USD 407 in Russell will begin offering a preschool class for children ages three to five.

According to a release from Superintendent Shelly Swayne, a single class will be offered daily from Noon to 3:30 PM at Simpson Elementary School. The class size is expected to be 15 students with lunch and snacks provided.

Swayne said around 40 percent of the current kindergarten students in the district did not attend a preschool due to costs and transportation. USD 407 will utilize Kansas State Department of Education four-year-old at risk funding to create a nearly cost free option. Although, some enrollment or lunch fees may occur. The district also hopes to offer a midday bus route to transport preschool children.

USD 407 will use licensed staff already in place for this new preschool class.

Swayne said no new tax dollars will be needed.
