Red Ribbon Week Promotes Drug Free Lifestyle

Red Ribbon WeekRussell County and City of Russell law enforcement and emergency personnel are encouraging local students this week to pledge "The Best Me is Drug Free" during this year's Red Ribbon Week.

Russell County Undersheriff Max Barrett says the goal of the week is to educate students about the devastating effects of illegal drug and alcohol use as well as encourage them to make good decisions. Barrett says law enforcement and the schools are only part of the equation to educate students about drugs.

"Parents can be a very effective thing," Barrett said. "Everybody talks about talking to your kids, and if you sit down and talk to them about smoking, if you talk to them about drinking, if you talk to them about using drugs, they're going to listen to you whether you honestly believe it or not. As a parent there's times you sit there wondering if they ever listen at all, but they do listen and if they see some of these things and you take these teaching moments to talk to them about it, kids will grasp that; they're very intelligent."

The awareness week runs from Tuesday, October 23 until Wednesday, October 31.
