Russell Churches Care Walk Raises More Than $7500

Shaffer Field at Russell High SchoolThe recent Russell Churches Care Walk to support the Russell County Food Pantry raised more than $7500, according to Walk organizers.

The Walk, sponsored by the Russell Ministerial Alliance, was held Sunday, October 24.

"The response from the participating faith communities and the people of Russell far exceeded our expectations, "said Rev. Roger Dennis of St. John Lutheran Church. The Russell Churches Care Walk replaced the annual CROP Walk this year. Last year, the Walk raised a little more than $2400 of which only $800 stayed in Russell County.

The Rev. Earl Haggard, pastor of Otterbein United Methodist Church and President of the Russell Food Pantry board, said, "The response shows how much the people of Russell care. When there is a need, people step up to the plate."

Asked what this means to the Food Pantry, Rev. Haggard replied, "We have had a significant increase in the number of people seeking help in the last couple of years. This means we will be able to help the hurting in the immediate future. It also removes the pressure we were experiencing to find funds to meet that need."

"St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, St. John Lutheran Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, Otterbein United Methodist Church, Bunker Hill United Methodist Church and Second Baptist Church provided volunteers, walkers, materials and pledged financial support to make the Russell Churches Care Walk possible," said Rev. Dennis, President of the Russell County Association of Churches. Larry Cooksey (Second Baptist) and Joan Weigel (St. Mary Queen of Angels) coordinated the event along with Rev. Dennis. "We also want to thank the school district, KRSL, the Russell County News and Perfect Print for the support they provided."

The association recently adopted the theme "Russell Churches Care" to highlight the combined efforts of member churches. The association now has t-shirts with the new theme and a cross that can be purchased. All net proceeds from the sale of the shirts will benefit the churches efforts to help those in need.
