Christmas Evening Fire Damages Russell Home

The fire, reported at just ahead of 9:45 PM and burning into the early Wednesday morning hours, destroyed two or three rooms in the rear main floor of the house and caused smoke damage throughout the majority of the building, according to Russell Fire Chief Sam Schmidt. Extensive water damage was also sustained after flames burned through an upstairs PVC water pipe, spilling water all throughout the rear of the house and flooding the basement.
The homeowner along with three dogs and one cat were able to get out safe without suffering any injuries, said Schmidt. However, one of the responding firefighters did suffer a minor injury when he was hit in the head by a wooden plank. The injured firefighter was checked by on-scene EMS personnel, but was not transported to the hospital.
Representatives from Rotary Rescue and the local Rotary Club responded to the blaze as well, providing water and coffee for the firefighters and emergency personnel.
An official cause of the fire is still under investigation.Read More Local News
