The USD 407 Board of Education met for its January regular monthly meeting Monday evening in downtown Russell with a full agenda of items to discuss, leading to a nearly five hour meeting when all was said and done.
Superintendent Dave Couch says although long, many important topics were addressed by the Board at the meeting.
One of note was a presentation of the overview of the common core standards or college-readiness curriculum that the district is in the process of implementing. Couch says Kathy Cook and a committee working with Cook has been tasked to monitor the transition and research differences.
"Common core standards are now called college and career ready standards," said Couch. "We've been working on implementing those in the district and it's a more uniform system. Along with that will tie in some evaluation systems that show how well we're doing teaching the common core or the college-career standards."
Also at Monday's meeting, the Board finalized the approval of a Russell High School Agriculture Farm Policy effective August 1 of this year that will put in place more specific rules about care and upkeep of students' animals at the school. Purchases of a new dust collection system for the RHS shop and a new sound system for Ruppenthal Middle School's auditorium were approved as well.
Four separate executive sessions were held also, with one relating to discussion of non-elected personnel and staffing lasting for more than two hours. Other executive session topics included security planning, teacher negotiations and superintendent's contract. Following the session dealing with the superintendent's contract, action was taken to add another year to Superintendent Couch's contract, effectively signing him on for a two year contract as he had one more year left on his previous agreement.
The Board will next meet Thursday, January 31 for a special meeting to discuss facilities planning. That meeting will be held at 5:30 PM at the Central Administration Office.
