The Russell High School Scholars Bowl Team capped off their best season in school history on Saturday, February 9 with a runner-up finish at the Class 3A State Scholars Bowl Meet in Cimarron.
Russell went 9-1 with their only loss coming to eventual state champ Wichita Independent.
Team members include Nathan Barney, Sydney Cisneros, Christopher Gulick, Shiv Gupta, Ethan Kaufman and Isaiah Stierlen. Head Coach Blaine Maier says he is very proud of his team.
"Nathan Barney and Ethan Kaufman have been involved all four years, and then as a sophomore, Chris Gulick moved into town and was an impact for us right away - those three are going to be a big loss for us," Maier said. "But on the other hand, we've got a nice nucleus coming back for next year. I think we've got some other kids that are biting at the bit for an opportunity to jump in there and see if we can make another run at it."
Russell finishes the season with an impressive 91-11 record, four team titles, five runner-up finishes, two thirds, their second-straight regional championship and a state runner-up trophy.
