Record Snowfall Amounts Around the Russell Area

KWCH-TV in Wichita reports Hays received 17 inches of snow and a town called Nashville, located in Kingman County in south central Kansas, took the prize for highest amount at 18 inches. KWCH also reports Salina received just a tick under a foot of snow.
KAKE-TV, also in Wichita, says nearby Natoma recorded 17 inches of accumulation.
According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Chance Hayes, official reports for the immediate Russell area vary, but totals from around the county conclude that anywhere from 11 to 15 inches of snow fell on the city during this one snowstorm. Snowfall amounts were greater in the northwest part of Russell County and were slightly less in the east, with some locally higher amounts reported throughout the county.
According to Hayes, actual liquid precipitation from the snow in Russell County varied from just over half an inch to nearly an inch and a quarter.
The National Weather Service says a storm in February of 1980 holds the record for dumping the most snow on Russell. That storm produced 14.8 inches.Read More Local News
