After numerous months of compiling and editing photographs and video footage, Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations have announced plans to officially release a DVD biography of the band in conjunction with a fundraiser for a young boy diagnosed with a rare liver cancer.
Drummer Bill Gasper said all proceeds from the sale of the DVD will be donated to Kayden's Kampaign, a fund established for Kayden Tiernan, the two-year-old son of Kerry and April (Weber) Tiernan. According to Kayden's grandmother, Julie Weber, a large tumor was found on his liver shortly after celebrating his second birthday. In September, he was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a childhood cancer that affects one in 1.2 million infants and children.
Gasper said Leon Frank, former member of the Jimmy Dee Band, generously spent countless hours producing the biography. While it is Frank's strong desire to get his work out to the public, he does not want to profit from the venture.
"We were initially only going to produce so many DVDs, and we thought that might cause a problem just to give them away to anybody who requested one," Gasper said. "Thus, we decided to sell the biography and donate the proceeds to Kayden's Kampaign. We feel this is a perfect choice for the money because we are all from Victoria and grew up with Kayden's grandparents, Julie (Brungardt) and Mitch Weber."
To add an extra incentive to purchase the biography, Gasper said anybody who buys a video for $15 will be given one ticket to a Jimmy Dee performance at the Fanchon Ballroom on March 2 from 8:30-11:30 p.m.
The band is donating its time, and Victoria native Mark Linenberger is donating the use of the facility. For those who want to bring their spouse or significant other, a free will donation will be accepted as the price of admission at the door. Additionally, Terry Pfeifer and Tom Schmidtberger, also Victoria natives and members of The Helping Hands of God, are planning to sell chances for a Traeger grill from Crawford Supply and other door prizes as a means to generate more donations for the family.
DVDs are available at the following locations: Hays – Cerv's; Victoria – Sunflower Bank, Gorham State Bank, and Victoria Food & Variety; Russell – Woelk's House of Diamonds, Jagged Edge, and D. Palma and Co.
Julie Weber said Kayden is currently undergoing treatment at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He has finished five rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the large tumor and awaits a liver transplant.
Kayden's Kampaign was initially established by family and friends at Golden Plains Credit Union as an ongoing effort to help the family with expenses.
"Our world was turned upside down on Sept. 25," Julie said. "But through the generous hearts and prayers of so many, Kayden's miracle has begun. Words can never express how thankful we are. We strongly believe in the power of prayer and we ask for you continued prayers as we face this challenging battle."
Kayden has a 3.5 year old brother Michael, and his paternal grandparents are Mike and Sherry Tiernan of Beloit. His great grandmothers are Margaret Brungardt, Victoria, and Colleen Tiernan, Fort Worth, Texas.
"We are overwhelmed and very much appreciate our hometown guys - Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations - for putting on this huge fundraiser for our little one," Mitch Weber said.
The DVD traces the history of the band from its early roots in 1975 all the way to the present. It features numerous photographs, both old and recent, along with video footage as far back as the 1970s when the band performed at the Jerry Lewis Telethon in the Mall at Hays.
"It's a great DVD and not just because I'm in it," Gasper said. "We just can't thank Leon Frank enough for all the hard work in producing it because it is a great piece of memorabilia for those of us in the band, as well as for all the many loyal followers we have had the past 30-plus years. It is because of that support that has made all of this possible. We want to encourage all of our fans to purchase one of these DVDs, enjoy an evening with the band, and most importantly, support a very worthy cause."Read More Local News
