Icy Road Conditions Cause Three Wrecks, One Fatality, Monday Evening

Fatal CrashThree separate rollover wrecks on Interstate 70 Monday evening in the Hays area sent several people to the hospital and killed one woman from Ellis.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 28-year-old Kirstin Nelson was killed when the pickup she was riding in hit an icy spot on I-70 at westbound mile marker 151 west of Hays just after 7:30 PM on Monday and lost control, eventually rolling into the median. 31-year-old Eric Nelson, Kirstin's husband and the driver, was taken to Hays Medical Center with possible injuries. Two juveniles, an 8-year-old and a 5-year-old, were also taken to the hospital with possible injuries.

Earlier Monday evening, at 6:30, the KHP says three men from the Kansas City area were injured and transported to Hays Medical Center after they were involved in a rollover wreck at westbound I-70 mile marker 162 just east of Hays where the vehicle rolled through the median and landed in the eastbound lanes of the highway. The driver, 22-year-old Umesh Darji, and occupants 18-year-old Jabez Darji and 16-year-old Birka Diswa were all taken to the hospital.

Just three minutes after the fatality wreck west of Hays, at 7:40 Monday night, the KHP reports 47-year-old Lawrence Hart, Jr. of Olathe lost control of his Chevy Blazer at westbound I-70 mile marker 172 east of Victoria, entered the median and rolled, landing in the eastbound passing lane. Hart was injured and taken to Hays Medical Center.

Everyone involved in each crash was buckled up, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
