Sean Spoonts of Onaga has been named the Russell High School and Ruppenthal Middle School Activities and Athletics Director after being offered the position at a special meeting of the USD 407 Board of Education on Monday.
Spoonts interviewed with the board on April 26 during another special meeting and accepted the contract offer soon after the board's Monday meeting. He is a current teacher and coach at Onaga, a 2A school just north of Wamego.
Superintendent Dave Couch says the decision to hire Spoonts was an easy one.
He replaces outgoing AD Mark Paul and will officially begin August 1, 2013.
Spoonts and wife Amy of 14 years bring three children; Garrison, age 9, Carson, age 7, and Teagan, age 3; to the community. Together with Sean's hire, Amy was also named Special Education Teacher at Bickerdyke Elementary School.
Other contract's approved Monday were for Nicole Wiggins as Kindergarten Teacher at Simpson Elementary School and Andrea Rackaway as Fifth Grade Teacher at BES.
The Board also discussed a slight change to the current budget dealing with special education funding. A public hearing was held, no one from the public was present to speak, and the change was approved and will be republished. More than $75,000 of projected funding for special education will not be received, but through republishment, just over $75,000 will be gained in overall net revenue.
