Several faces, some familiar and some not, will be in new places next school year in Russell as the USD 407 Board of Education announced several more retirements, resignations and new contract offers at its regular meeting Monday evening.
One retirement was presented by Superintendent Dave Couch for Ruppenthal Middle School Custodian Sharon Jewell. Resignations included DeAnna Carter as Early Childhood Special Education Teacher at Simpson Elementary School, Jeff Whitesides as Science Teacher at Russell High School, Sarah Rhodes as Cheerleading Sponsor at RHS, and Dave King as Head Football Coach and Summer Strength and Conditioning Coach at RHS. King will switch from RHS Head Football Coach to RHS Assistant Football Coach and add RMS Assistant Basketball Coach.
New contracts were offered to Deedre Frasier for RHS Language Arts Teacher; Zach Shipley for RMS Social Science Teacher, RHS Head Baseball Coach and RMS Head Boys Basketball Coach; Roger Sells for RHS Head Wrestling Coach; Beau Gadwood for RMS Head Football Coach, RMS Head Girls Basketball Coach and RHS Summer Weightlifting Coach; Kim Schmelzle for RHS Assistant Track Coach and RMS Assistant Volleyball Coach; Jeff Brull for RHS Assistant Football Coach; Eric Swanson for RHS Assistant Baseball Coach; and Trevor Siebert for RHS Assistant Basketball Coach.
Other movement from this school year to next will include Melissa Granberry switching from RMS Head Volleyball Coach to RHS Assistant Volleyball Coach, Kim Boxberger switching from RHS Assistant Volleyball Coach to RMS Head Volleyball Coach and Corey Flax switching from RHS Assistant Football Coach to RMS Assistant Football Coach.
Additional business discussed at Monday's meeting was the approval of a backpack food program for disadvantaged kids to begin next school year and the awarding of bids for three equipment repairs and upgrades at district buildings. They included the purchase of a wheelchair lift for Simpson Elementary School that will cost $22,528, repairs to one of the RMS boilers that will total $19,400 and replacement of a hot water heater at RHS that will cost $19,945.
The Board also heard from RMS Principal Gaylon Walter about a middle school promotion and retention proposal he has been researching. As Superintendent Couch explains, Walter expressed concerns of attendance problems in his building.
The proposal is only preliminary and would not go into effect at least until next year, if it is approved. No action was taken Monday on the matter.
