Community Foundation Supports Russell Recreation Commission

Russell Rec 2013The Russell County Area Community Foundation announced Wednesday $4,500 in grants to the Russell Recreation Commission (RRC).

"The Community Foundation is excited to partner with Russell Recreation to offer new educational programs and support improvements at its state-of-art exercise facility," said Angela Muller, Executive Director of the Community Foundation.

The grants include $2,000 to develop a nature-based program for children ages 3-12. The grant will help purchase prism microscopes, binoculars, field guides, insect nets and other material that children will use in a new hands-on, summer learning class. The goal is to eventually offer nature classes year-round, expanding the program to adults.

The Russell Recreation Commission also receives $2,500 to support efforts to improve its new center. "An anonymous donor has come forward to offer $25,000 to the RRC, provided it can raise a matching amount by July 1. The Community Foundation noticed this and wanted to be a part of this effort," said Muller.

Since its inception in 2001, the Community Foundation and its generous donors have directed more than $1 million to meaningful causes and issues throughout the Russell County area, including healthful living, the arts, historical preservation and hunger relief.
