UPDATE: Suspicious Cylinder Found North of Russell High School Destroyed, Rendered Safe

Suspicious Device North of RHS Baseball Field 6-10-13UPDATE 7:30 PM Monday: Union Pacific Railroad workers discovered a suspicious cylinder on the railroad tracks north of the Russell High School baseball field on Monday afternoon at just after noon.

Members of the Kansas Highway Patrol Bomb Squad were called in and removed the device at around 3:30 PM.

It was taken east of Russell to a remote area by the bomb squad and destroyed. According to Russell Police Chief Dale Weimaster, no explosives were found and the cylinder was rendered safe.

No injuries were reported and no damage to property occurred.

While the KHP Bomb Squad worked the scene, portions of East 12th and North Culp Streets were blocked off.

Members of the Russell Police Department, Fire Department and County EMS also responded.

Weimaster said in a press release the investigation of how the cylinder got onto the tracks is continuing.

Original Story - Members of the Russell Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol Bomb Squad are investigating a suspicious device located on the railroad tracks just north of the Russell High School baseball field.

The device was found by railroad workers just before 1 PM.

Russell Police officers arrived on scene shortly after and the KHP Bomb Squad arrived around 2:30 PM. The Russell County EMS and City Fire Department are also on scene.

Officials are asking everyone to stay out of the area and residents to remain indoors. They have blocked off the 700 and 800 blocks of East 12th Street and the 1100 and 1200 Blocks of North Culp Street.
