Two Barton County Men Die in Oilfield Accident

Barton County SheriffBarton County officials say a man and his son-in-law died in an oilfield-related accident Monday.

Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir says the men died July 8 about one mile northeast of Claflin. The location was a rural saltwater disposal lease.

Bellendir says the victims, 50-year-old Curtis Hoffman and 30-year-old Kebby Myers, apparently died after being overcome by hydrogen sulfide gas.

Family members went to check on the men when they didn't arrive home.

Hydrogen sulfide gas is a byproduct of the production of oil and natural gas. A hazardous materials crew was called in to clean up.

The accident is under investigation.
