Budget Finalized, Courthouse Upgrades Addressed by County Commissioners

Russell County CourthouseRussell County Commissioners finalized the fiscal year 2014 budget and discussed courthouse building upgrades at their regular meeting on Monday.

Commissioners announced the budget will actually include a mill levy decrease of nearly six mills because of increased property values around the county.

Even with that decrease, Commissioners were able to put more money into other funds, such as the County Road and Bridge Department, so much needed improvements can be made to county blacktops and bridges.

Another issue discussed at the meeting that will cost a significant amount of money was the upcoming possible handicap accessible upgrades to the courthouse building.

According to Commissioner Brad Zweifel, the Russell County Courthouse is currently not up to ADA code and a report reviewed by the Commissioners Monday went into great detail of all the things that need to be done to the building and grounds to make them compliant.

No action to move forward with any of the improvements was taken, but the topic will be addressed again at the Commissioners next meeting.
