Rural Opportunity Zone Program Gains Local Interest

ROZ mapAccording to the Kansas Department of Commerce, Russell County has 10 people in the recently introduced Rural Opportunity Zone (ROZ) program with 10 more people on the waiting list.

The program, built to entice young people to come and live in Russell County and other rural areas in Kansas, provides tax incentives and funding for the payment of college loans.

Russell County Economic Development and Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Janae Talbott says in 2014, the 10 people on the waiting list will come off as enough funding has been committed from Russell County and the City of Russell to pay for them.

However, anyone gaining approval for ROZ at this point will have to wait until 2015 for funding unless additional partners want to invest in the program.

The waiting list is first come first serve and applications can be found at www.kansascommerce.com. Kansas Commerce handles all approvals into the program.

Talbott says as of January 1, 2014 Russell County will have 20 people benefiting from the ROZ program and she looks forward to gaining additional participants on the approval waiting list.
