Dr Lucynda RabenThe Kansas Dental Association’s 2014 Dentist of the Year Award was presented to Russell native and current Wichita resident Dr. Lucynda Raben at the KDA Annual Session on Saturday, April 12.

“It is such an honor to receive the Dentist of the Year award from the Kansas Dental Association,” said Dr. Raben, a 1974 graduate of Russell High School. “I am truly humbled.”

“Lucynda is a passionate, tireless worker for the dentists of Kansas and organized dentistry in general. She is committed to improving dental health for the citizens of Kansas with a strong effort to educate them in preventive dental practices through her leadership role in support of fluoridation and advocacy for oral health, at both the local and state level. She has been an active representative of dentistry in her many roles on the board of directors of Delta Dental of Kansas and the Delta Dental of Kansas Foundation, where she is currently Board Chair for both organizations. Lucynda’s service is the definition of the KDA Dentist of the Year,” stated Dr. Jason Wagle, Wichita periodontist and KDA President.

Recently, Dr. Raben testified to the Kansas Legislature House Committee of Health and Human Services in favor of community water fluoridation. She also served as a leader in Wichita in last year’s attempt to keep optimized levels of fluoride in the water.

Dr. Raben has been a delegate of the Wichita District Dental Society and served on several councils and committees for the Kansas Dental Association throughout her 30 years of membership. She is also an active member the Dental Assisting program of the Wichita Area Technical College, serving on the Advisory Board.

Dr. Raben graduated from the University of Kansas and went on to the University of Iowa to attend dental school. From Iowa City, she moved to New York City, where she had been chosen for an externship and a GPR residency spending time at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Bird S. Coler Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital. In addition, she completed a certificate program with the New York Institute of Clinical Oral Pathology.

From New York, Dr. Raben moved back to Kansas to practice dentistry with her father, Cy. They split their time between two offices, one in Russell and one in Wichita, and she eventually purchased the Wichita office and her father worked for her his last seven years in practice.

The Kansas Dental Association thanks Dr. Lucynda Raben for her dedication to the profession of dentistry.
