The USD 407 Board of Education spent some money at its monthly meeting Monday evening as the Board approved the purchase of a new wheelchair accessible bus and moved forward with a project to upgrade the district's Local Area Network.
In an effort to better serve wheelchair-bound students, the Board voted to purchase a 21-passenger bus for a total of $55,000 that can transport up to four wheelchairs.
Superintendent Dave Couch says a handicap bus is something the district has made do without for several years, but the need for such a bus has grown.
Another couple purchases the Board approved Monday included buying cabling and hardware to upgrade the entire district's Local Area Network (LAN) regarding wireless technology use in all USD 407 buildings.
Couch says the upgrade work will be overseen by district IT Director Cory Funk.
The cabling will cost about $78,000 and the hardware will cost an additional $77,000.
Also Monday, the Board voted to purchase the next year's supply of copy paper from Office Products Inc. of Russell for nearly $17,000.
Student organization fundraisers, the 1:1 tablet initiative and the ongoing facilities study were all addressed as well.
The Board decided to let Superintendent Couch begin pricing Dell Venue tablets and look into whether or not the 1:1 initiative should be enacted for just Russell High School or RHS and Ruppenthal Middle School.
