Russell City Council Discusses Airport Renaming

Russell City Council 5-6-14The Russell City Council further discussed the possibility of renaming the Russell Municipal Airport at its monthly work study session Tuesday afternoon.

Councilman Jim Cross last month suggested renaming the airport or simply the airport terminal after Vernon Morgenstern.

No action was taken Tuesday, but City Manager Jon Quinday said if the Council wants to rename the entire airport, an ordinance will need to be passed and the FAA will need to be contacted, but if only the terminal is renamed, a simple motion and vote is required.

Cross says he can't think of a more deserving individual.

Also Tuesday, Russell Police Chief Dale Weimaster presented a request to the Council to purchase new in-car video systems for the PD's patrol cars.

He says the current systems, some as old as eight years, are malfunctioning regularly and improved technology is now available.

The cost to replace six units will be just over $35,000. The purchase is a budgeted item. The Council will vote on it later this month.

The possible prohibition of open carry of firearms in municipal buildings was also briefly discussed Tuesday.
