County Officials Remind Public about Landfill Rules

Russell CountyKansas is well known for its wind and Russell County officials remind you that wind can have a huge effect on the daily operations of a much used county facility - the landfill.

On days with high wind, Russell County may be forced to close the landfill due to blowing trash.

Before heading to the landfill on high wind days, call ahead to be certain it is open. The landfill's number is 483-3360 and the Russell County Shop's number is 483-4032.

Russell County Administrator John Fletcher says even on calm days, folks need to remember to secure their trash loads before bringing them to the landfill.

Fletcher says all loose trash and grass clippings must be bagged.

Also, items must be placed in the correct piles to keep the landfill compliant.

For example, the tree and brush pile is only for tree limbs, trunks, large branches and brush; not grass clippings, trash, trash bags, lumber, pallets or tires.

The Russell County Landfill is open Monday through Friday from 9 to 4:30 and Saturday from 9 to 2:30, and closed on Sundays and holidays.
