Russell Falls in Double Overtime

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team closed out the season on the road at Pratt on Friday, November 1 with a heartbreaking double overtime loss. The Greenbacks won 26-20.

Pratt (2-7) quarterback Devon Weber scored the first touchdown of the game on a six yard run with 6:37 to play in the first quarter. The two-point conversion attempt was no good and Pratt led 6-0 after one period.

With only 1:33 left before halftime, Russell (1-8) running back Jacob Windholz broke free for an 85 yard touchdown run. Bronco kicker Andres Narvaez hit the extra point and Russell led 7-6 at halftime.

At the 9:19 mark in the third stanza, Pratt reclaimed the lead when Weber rushed 31 yards for another TD. The two-point conversion was good and the Greenbacks led 14-7 heading into the fourth frame.

Russell running back Rhett Pospichal returned a Pratt punt 62 yards for a touchdown with 5:14 remaining in the game. The extra point kick was good by Narvaez and the contest was tied at 14-14. On the next Pratt drive, the Greenbacks got the ball inside the Bronco 10 yard line, but fumbled the football with under two minutes to play and Russell linebacker Hunter Reddig recovered the fumble. However, the Broncos could not reach the endzone before time expired and the game went to overtime tied at 14-14.

In the first overtime session, Pratt got the ball first and scored on the first play with a 10 yard run by Weber. However, the two-point conversion attempt was no good. It took all four downs for Russell to score, but Bronco quarterback Jacob Sohm found Pospichal for an eight yard TD pass to tie the game at 20-20. However, the subsequent extra point kick was blocked and the score remained 20-20.

Russell got the ball first in the second extra session and had to settle for a 33 yard field goal attempt, which was blocked again. It took three plays, but Pratt's Weber scored another rushing touchdown from seven yards out to win the game.

Pratt outgained Russell 208 total yards to 185.

Windholz finished with 89 yards rushing on 16 carries for Russell. Sohm passed for 74 yards.

To go along with four touchdowns, Weber rushed for 204 yards on 31 carries for Pratt.

The Russell Broncos finish the season with a 1-8 record.
