Momentum continued for the Russell High School girls basketball team on Tuesday, February 11 as the Lady Broncos won their sixth game out of the last seven contests. The Russell girls defeated 11-win Sacred Heart 53-39 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell on Senior Recognition Night.

The game was tight in the first half as the Lady Knights actually led 10-8 after one period and 24-23 at halftime. However, Russell claimed the lead in the third quarter and led 35-30 heading into the final frame. Russell's Camille Dortland hit a pair of three-pointers early in the fourth stanza and the Lady Broncos made free throws down the stretch to pull away for the victory.

Dortland, Megan Peeler and Aniya Stierlen all scored 13 points for the Lady Broncos. That was a season-high for Peeler, who missed the last month with an injury. Stierlen also recorded 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. After suffering an injury in the first quarter, Rylan Reeves came back to score 11 points all in the second half.

Amber Palen paced Sacred Heart with 11 points and Ally Cochran followed with 10 points.

The Lady Broncos only committed 10 turnovers and were 16-of-24 from the free throw line, compared to Sacred Heart's 14 turnovers and one-of-five shooting from the foul line.

The Russell girls improve to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the NCAA.

In the boys game, Russell stayed within striking distance until the fourth quarter, but Sacred Heart led the whole way and won 71-37.

The Knights led 16-10 after the first period, 30-20 at the break and 49-37 after three quarters. However, Russell did not score in the final stanza and Sacred Heart cruised to the win.
