Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolBoys: Sylvan-Lucas 53, Logan 50

WAKEENEY-Jonah Huehl scored 22 points and Alex Hernandez added 15 as the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs basketball team battled back in the fourth quarter then hung on to beat Logan 53-50 Thursday evening in the Sub-State semifinals at Trego Community High School in WaKeeney.

Huehl scored the Mustangs' first seven points, but the Trojans battled back to tie the score 10-10 after the first quarter.  Logan then gained the upper hand over the final four minutes of the second quarter to lead 25-21 at halftime.

Sylvan-Lucas started the second half with a 13-3 run to lead 34-28 as they appeared ready to seize control of the contest.  But the Trojans scored five points in the final 30 seconds to cut the Mustang advantage to 34-33 after three periods.  From there, the lead changed hands several times and with Logan in front 48-46, Jaxson Heenan knocked down his second three-point basket of the game with a little more than two minutes remaining in regulation to give Sylvan-Lucas a lead they would never reqlinquish.

The Mustangs made three free throws to lead 52-48 with 14 seconds left, but Logan's Zach Jansonious scored a layup off an offensive rebound with eight seconds remaining to trim the Sylvan-Lucas lead to 52-50.  After Heenan made one of two free throws to widen the Mustang lead to three points, Logan had one more chance but Nate Cruz's three-point attempt at the buzzer was long and Sylvan-Lucas qualified for the sub-state championship game for the first time since 2016.

Three-point shooting was a big factor in Thursday's game with Sylvan-Lucas knocking down seven treys while Logan (14-10) converted six.

Sylvan-Lucas (18-6) will face St. Francis Saturday night at 7:30 PM with a trip to the Class 1A State Tournament on the line.  The Indians (15-7) rallied to beat Quinter earlier Thursday evening 56-43 after outscoring the Bulldogs 15-0 in the final quarter.
