RHS Drops Home Opener to Ellsworth

Russell vs Ellsworth - Week 2The Russell High School football team fell to 0-2 on the season after losing to Ellsworth 36-14 on Friday, Sept. 7 at Shaffer Field in Russell.

The Broncos jumped out to an 8-0 lead after Riley Pfannenstiel darted 79 yards on the team's first play from scrimmage.  Ellsworth (1-1 overall, 1-0 NCAA) scored on their first drive to make it 8-6 and then added a 19-yard field goal go up 9-8 late in the first quarter.  Russell (0-2, 0-2) went back in front 14-9 on Keltonn Morris' 6-yard run early in the second quarter.

The score remained 14-9 until midway through the third quarter when the Bearcats took control of the game.  Ellsworth scored touchdowns on four of five possessions and rolled to their first win of the season.

Russell finished with 271 yards of total offense, but was held to just 92 in the second half.  Ellsworth had 310 in the second half and ended up with 466 total offensive yards.

Russell vs Ellsworth - Week 2Pfannenstiel ran for 162 yards and one touchdown to pace the Broncos.  Morris had 58 yards and a score.  Alex Baldwin completed 3 of 5 passes for 48 yards.  Dylan Walker had two catches for 41 yards.

Ellsworth sophomore quarterback Takota Anderson had a big game.  He ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns and completed 12 of 16 passes for 133 yards and another score.

Russell plays their next two games on the road and begins that stretch on Friday in Beloit.  The Trojans are off to a 2-0 start after blowout wins over Concordia and Smith Center.  Gametime is at 7pm.  Countdown to Kickoff begins at 6:30pm on Classic Hits 95.9 and www.krsl.com.
