TMP Pulls Away from Russell with Strong Second Half

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell High School football team lost 34-6 to rival TMP-Marian at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays on Friday, September 11.

The Broncos (0-2, 0-2 MCL) scored the first touchdown of the game with 7:09 to play in the first quarter. Running back Jesse Whitmer capped off a seven-play, 47-yard drive with a 10-yard TD run. The two-point conversion was no good and Russell led 6-0 after one period.

The Monarchs (1-1, 1-1 MCL) went on to score the next 34 unanswered points.

TMP quarterback Kade Harris scored a one-yard rushing touchdown with 2:40 left to play in the first half and the extra point gave the Monarchs their first lead. They led 7-6 at halftime.

In the third stanza, Harris completed a 22-yard pass to running back Lance Lang. Lang fumbled the ball at the goal line, but wide receiver Jace Wentling recovered the fumble in the endzone for a touchdown. Harris also scored another rushing TD and the Monarchs led 20-6 after three quarters.

In the fourth period, TMP running back Bryce Seib scored a rushing touchdown and Harris hooked up with wide receiver Mark Rack for a 95-yard touchdown pass.

TMP outgained Russell 312 total yards to 152. The Monarchs finished with 185 yards passing and 127 yards rushing, while the Broncos finished with 55 yards passing and 97 yards on the ground.

Fullback Tyler Moresco led Russell on the ground with 35 yards on 14 carries. Quarterback Braydon Gibson completed five passes for all 55 yards. Wide receiver Josh Sohm caught four passes for 26 yards.

For TMP, Seib finished with 50 yards rushing and Harris totaled 44 yards on the ground. Harris completed eight passes for all 185 yards. Rack caught two passes for 106 yards.

Next for Russell is the first home game of the season. Norton comes to Shaffer Field on Friday, September 18. It will also be Senior Recognition Night for the Broncos. Pregame coverage starts at 6:30 PM on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com with kickoff at 7 PM.
