Lady Broncos Win Regional Championship

2012 RHS Girls Golf TeamThe Russell High School girls golf team qualified for state for the fourth time in five years after winning the Class 3-2-1A Regional Tournament at the Russell Municipal Course on Monday, Oct. 8.

The Lady Broncos shot a 418 and tied for first with Cheney.  Russell ended up winning the team title on a tie break.  The Lady Broncos' fifth person score was three strokes better than Cheney's fifth person.  Hoisington finished third with a 446.  Russell, Cheney and Hoisington all qualified their teams for state.

Russell had three golfers finish in the top 10.  Alex Ptacek tied for first with a 98, but lost a one-hole playoff and ended up in second place.  Megan Boxberger took third with a 101.  Anna Plante posted a 104 and placed sixth.  Janna Schulte tied for 11th with a 115.  Megan Hendrick shot a 128 and Aubrey Campbell a 140.

The 3-2-1A State Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, Oct. 15 in Cheney at the Cherry Oaks Course.

Russell is enjoying their greatest run in girls golf history right now.  The Lady Broncos qualified as a team for the first time in school histroy in 2008 and finished third in 4A.  Russell made it back as a team in 2009 and did not place.  After missing state as a team in 2010, the Lady Broncos returned in 2011 and placed fifth in 3-2-1A.
