The Russell High School football team could not overcome a 22-point first half deficit and lost to rival Thomas More Prep 36-26 in their Class 3A, District 15 opener at Lewis Field Stadium on Friday, Oct. 12.
TMP built a 22-0 lead late in the first half before the Broncos got on a board on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Alex Baldwin to Eric Rourke. It was 22-6 at halftime.
Russell cut the deficit to 29-18 after three quarters with a pair of touchdowns - 84-yard pass from Baldwin to David Crawford and 10-yard run from Dylan Walker.
But the Broncos' rally stalled in the fourth quarter. Russell punted and threw an interception on their next two possessions. TMP scored a TD with 1:45 remaining to go up 36-18. The Broncos added a touchdown with seven seconds remaining on Walker's 65-yard wide receiver option pass to Keltonn Morris.
Russell ended up outgaining TMP 334-308, but committed two turnovers.
Alex Baldwin completed 4-of-8 passes for a career-high 126 yards and two touchdowns. Dylan Walker ran for 81 yards. Keltonn Morris rushed for 75 yards.
Russell falls to 1-6, while TMP improves to 2-5.
The Broncos will need a win in Hoisington on Friday to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Cardinals are 3-4 after losing to Scott City 36-0. Kickoff is at 7pm. Countdown to Kickoff begins at 6:30pm on Classic Hits 95.9 and www.krsl.com.
