The Russell High School girls golf team fell short in their bid for a state championship, but still tied the school record for the program's best finish by placing third at the 3-2-1A State Tournament at Cherry Oaks in Cheney on Monday, Oct. 15.
The Lady Broncos shot a 411 and tied Cheney. Cheney, who Russell beat on a tie break last week to win the regional title in Russell, won the tie break on Monday to finish second. Syracuse won the team title with a 397.
Three Lady Broncos earned medals. Megan Boxberger placed fifth with a 97. Anna Plante was 15th with a 102. Alex Ptacek shot a 103 and was 19th. Janna Schulte posted 108, Megan Hendrick and 124 and Aubrey Campbell a 126.
Russell, under first-year coach Brad Banker, finishes the season by winning five tournament titles, including the program's second-ever regional crown, and makes state for the fourth time in five years.
