Russell Splits with Beloit

The Russell High School girls used a big second quarter to grab a 16-point halftime lead and then held off a late run by Beloit to earn a 49-40 win on Friday, Jan. 4 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.
The Lady Broncos led 15-13 after one quarter and then outscored Beloit 18-4 in the second quarter to go up 33-17 at halftime. The Lady Trojans trimmed Russell's lead to eight midway through the third quarter and then to six late. But the Lady Broncos got some key stops and free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Madison Beagley scored 15 points and Janna Schulte 12 to lead Russell. Chantal Prester followed with eight and Megan Boxberger six.
The Lady Broncos improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the NCAA.
In the boys game, Beloit exploded for 42 first half points and won 64-18 over Russell.
The Trojans, who are ranked third in Class 3A, led 16-5 after one quarter, 42-7 at the half and 60-11 after three quarters.
Russell had just three players score in the game. Keltonn Morris had eight points, Brandon Bachar six and Austin Donovan four.
Beloit's Austin Budke scored a game-high 29 points.
Russell falls to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The Russell boys and girls travel to SE-Saline on Tuesday. The girls game tips off at 6pm with the boys to follow around 7:30pm. Both games will be on Classic Hits 95.9 and www.krsl.com.Read More Sports
