The league, which plays games using rules from the 1860s, will be called the Kansas Vintage Baseball Association.
A group of baseball purists met in Salina on Sunday, Feb. 10 to create the league, including Russell Recreation Director Mike Blanke.
Blanke says the KVBA will consist of two divisions. The west division will include Russell, Nicodemus, Jetmore's Hodgemen 9 and Lyons. The east division will include Chase Co., Emporia and two teams from Wichita's Cowtown Museum.
The league will open its inaugural season on April 27 in Russell with the Vintage Baseball Showcase Classic. Six of the eight teams are expected to compete in the one-day tournament.
After that, Russell's initial schedule will include four games against Nicodemus and Jetmore's Hodgemen 9.
The season will end in October with a state tournament.
If you would like to play on Russell's vintage baseball team, call Mike Blanke at the RRC office at 483-6966. The team is open to any man or woman 16 years of age or older.Read More Sports
