Russell Girls Advance to Sub-State Title Game

The Russell High School girls basketball team is now just one win away from their second-ever trip to state after beating Hoisington 42-30 in the semifinals of the Norton 3A Sub-State on Thursday, Feb. 28.
The Lady Broncos trailed 14-13 at halftime and 18-13 early in the third quarter before rallying. Savanna Huff hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game at 18 and sparked a 19-3 run. Russell led 32-21 after three quarters and built their lead to as many as 16 in the fourth quarter.
Madison Beagley led all scorers with 14 points. Huff hit three of Russell's four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points.
The Lady Broncos improve to 17-5.
Russell will meet Ellsworth (14-8) in the sub-state championship game in Norton on Saturday at 6pm. The Lady Bearcats cruised to a 51-27 win over Norton in Thursday's other semifinal game. This will be the fifth time the two schools have played this season. Russell is 3-1 versus the Lady Bearcats.
