The Russell High School girls basketball team led from start to finish and upset third-seeded Caney Valley 50-42 in the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament in Hutchinson on Wednesday, March 6.
Each team struggled from the field out of the gate. The sixth-seeded Lady Broncos only led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter, but got their offense going after that. Russell led 23-18 at halftime and 39-27 after three quarters. Caney Valley (20-2) cut the Lady Broncos' lead to five with about a minute remaining. But Russell did not let the Lady Bullpups any closer.
Russell hit 9 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished 14 of 22 for the game.
Madison Beagley hit a pair of threes and scored 17 points to lead the Lady Broncos. Chantal Prester also nailed a pair of three-pointers and scored 11 points. Janna Schulte had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Russell improves to 19-5 on the season and has won six-straight. The 19 wins ties the school record for the most wins in a single season.
The Lady Broncos will take on Garden Plain (23-1) in the semifinals on Friday at 3pm at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Garden Plain beat Riley County 57-34.
In Wednesday's two other first round games, top-seeded Burlington got a scare, but beat Sabetha 48-46 and Hillsboro topped Holcomb 53-45.
