Russell Earns Homecoming Win Over Republic Co.

RHS FootballThe Russell High School football team snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 26-12 homecoming win over Republic Co. on Friday, Sept. 27 at Shaffer Field in Russell.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Broncos got on the scoreboard first on Reshean Holloway's 3-yard run early in the second quarter. The score remained 6-0 at halftime.

Russell took the ball first in the third quarter and scored on Kiefer Craig's 2-yard run to go up 12-0.  Republic Co. made it 12-6 with a 6-yard run by Derek Vanous with 53 seconds remaining in the third.  The Broncos answered back just 51 seconds later when Craig darted 60 yards for a TD to go up 20-6.

Craig scored his third touchdown with 4:44 remaining in the game on a 10-yard run to extend Russell's lead to 26-6.

The Buffaloes found the endzone one more time when Tyler Popelka found Lane Shoemaker on a 61-yard pass. But Russell was able to run out the clock on their final possession.

Craig had a big night in his first varsity game at running back. The junior rushed for 144 yards. Chase Prester followed with 68 yards on the ground.

Russell out-gained Republic Co. 303 to 227 in total yards.

The Broncos improve to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in the NCAA. The Buffaloes fall to 0-4 overall, 0-4 in league play and have now lost 27-straight dating back to the 2010 season.

Russell will be Saline County for their next two games and starts that stretch on Friday at SE-Saline (4-0). Gametime is at 7pm. Catch the game on Classic Hits 95.9 and www.krsl.com beginning at 6:30pm.

Side note... Tristen Hayes and Isaiah Stierlen were crowning RHS Homecoming Queen and King prior to the game.
