Boys: Ellinwood 54, Russell 41
The Russell girls opened the 2013-14 season with an overtime, come-from-behind 61-58 win at home versus Ellinwood on Friday, December 6.
The Lady Broncos trailed 19-8 at the end of the first quarter, but put together a stellar second quarter and finished the first half only down 22-19. Both teams went neck-and-neck in the third, with the score tied at 35 heading in to the fourth quarter. In the fourth frame, the Lady Broncos and Lady Eagles traded multiple baskets, but in the end, a huge three-point bucket by Megan Boxberger with just seconds left on the clock, forced overtime. With hot shooting from the free throw line, Russell took control in the overtime period and came away with the three point win.
Russell was 14 of 22 from the foul line and 9 of 10 in the overtime period.
Megan Boxberger led in scoring with 26, a career high. She knocked down six three-pointers. Janna Schulte scored a career high 22 and tallied 10 rebounds. She finished 11 of 16 from the charity stripe.
Russell improves to 1-0.
In the boys game, Russell came out with great energy and looked to hang with Ellinwood early, but in the second quarter the Eagles broke the game open and never looked back, eventually beating the Broncos 54-41.
The Broncos trailed 12-8 at the end of one, but 32-17 at the half. Great defense and timely buckets led to a Russell rally in the third quarter, as the score was 46-26 heading in to the final period. The rally eventually fell just short, however, as the Broncos sent the Eagles to the foul line 13 times in the fourth, with eight of those free shots connecting.
Eric Rourke led Russell with 13 points and Noah Gfeller finished with 10.
The Broncos fall to 0-1.
