Russell Girls, Boys Claim Victories

Boys: Russell 51, Lincoln 37

The Russell girls dominated Nickerson Friday, December 13 in the second round of the Morris-Stephens Classic in Lincoln, 59-29.

The Lady Broncos never trailed and led the game at the half 39-9, eventually cruising to their second win of the season. Twelve Russell players saw time in the lopsided affair, but only four scored.

Russell was 11 of 16 from the foul line.

Janna Schulte paced the Lady Broncos with 26 points, a new career high. Megan Boxberger tallied 16 points. Kyleigh Kasper finished with 11, a new career high.

Russell improves to 2-1.

The Russell boys also picked up a win - their first of the season - Friday night by beating the host Lincoln Leopards, 51-37.

The Broncos led 24-22 at halftime and battled neck-and-neck with Lincoln throughout the third quarter, but behind six final frame points from Eric Rourke and a one-handed dunk by Reshean Holloway, Russell broke the game open in the fourth.

The Broncos totaled 43 rebounds on the night, compared to only 27 from Lincoln.

Holloway led Russell with 13 points and Jordan Swanson recorded eight. Along with his six points, Rourke tallied 12 rebounds. Holloway pulled down nine boards.

The Broncos improve to 1-2.

The Russell girls and boys will each next play for 4th Place at the Amos Morris-George Stephens Classic in Lincoln on Saturday, December 14. The Lady Broncos will take on Phillipsburg who beat Plainville Friday and the Russell boys will face off against Ellsworth who knocked off Phillipsburg in the second round. The girls game will be first at 5 PM and the boys game will follow at 6:30. Both games will be at the Lincoln Elementary School. Both games will also be broadcast live on Classic Hits 95.9 and KRSL.com.
