Broncos Split at Ellsworth

The Russell High School girls basketball team opened the 2014 portion of their schedule with a solid 50-46 road win at Ellsworth on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
The Lady Broncos led 20-18 after one quarter, 29-26 at halftime and 37-33 after three quarters. Russell extended their lead to eight early in the fourther quarter. The Lady Bearcats (4-3 overall, 1-2 NCAA) got as close as four down the stretch, but the Lady Broncos had an answer for each Ellsworth run.
Megan Boxberger and Kyleigh Kasper overcame foul troubles to lead Russell. Boxberger hit a pair of three's and had 14 points. Kasper scored a career-high 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Russell is now 4-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
In the boys game, Russell was hoping for their second win this season over Ellsworth, but it was not meant to be as the Bearcats used a late fourth quarter run to grab a 58-51 victory.
The game featured seven lead changes and five ties.
The Broncos overcame an eight-point first half deficit to take a 29-24 halftime lead. Russell extended their lead to 41-33 late in the third quarter before Ellsworth rallied. The Bearcats (2-5, 1-2) tied the game at 46 midway through the fourth quarter and finished the game on a 12-5 run.
Russell had three players reach double-figures. Eric Rourke had 12 points and Reshean Holloway and Austin Donovan each scored 10.
The Broncos fall to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the NCAA.
