Russell Girls Edge Ellsworth in Opener

RHS BasketballThe Russell High School girls basketball team opened the Hoisington Winter Jam with a 54-52 win over Ellsworth on Monday, Jan. 20 at the Hoisington Activities Center.

The Lady Broncos (7-4) trailed 15-8 after the first quarter, but outscored Ellsworth 17-5 in the second to lead 25-20 at halftime.

Russell extended their lead to 38-28 at the end of the third quarter and to 45-32 midway through the fourth before the Lady Bearcats (6-4) rallied.

Ellsworth got within four with less than 30 seconds remaining and then got a three-pointer from Halle Connally with 0.9 seconds to go to make it a two-point game. Ellsworth's senior guard went to the foul line and intentionally missed the free throw to give her team a chance at a quick bucket. But Russell got the rebound to seal their second victory over the Lady Bearcats in two weeks.

Alex Ptacek led Russell with 15 points. Kyleigh Kasper followed with 13. Janna Schulte and Megan Boxberger each had 10 points.

Ellsworth's Rachel Herzog led all scorers with 21 points. Connally followed with 15.

Russell advances to Friday's semifinal game at 3pm and will take on Ellinwood. The Lady Eagles rolled in their first round game, beating LaCrosse 60-26. You can listen to Friday's game on Classic Hits 95.9 and here on krsl.com.
