Defense from both teams was the story early, but second half free throw shooting from Ellinwood led the Eagles to a 49-42 win over the Russell boys in consolation play of the Hoisington Winter Jam on Thursday at the Hoisington Activities Center.
The Eagles led only 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, stretched the lead to 16-12 at halftime and battled through a third quarter Bronco comeback to lead 32-26 heading into the final stanza. Russell's Eric Rourke and Noah Gfeller each scored six points in that third frame to tie the ballgame at 26 at one point, but fouling issues caught up to the Broncos as Ellinwood was in the double bonus for much of the fourth quarter and went 13 of 20 from the free throw line in the final frame.
Reshean Holloway led Russell with 11 points. Rourke had 10. Brandon Bachar and Gfeller each scored nine, with Gfeller's coming on three makes from downtown.
For Ellinwood, Kaleb Schartz led with 18, matching his scoring output from the Eagles December 6 win versus Russell in the season opener.
Russell falls to 2-10 and has lost eight-straight since starting the season 2-2.
The Broncos will play for seventh place on Saturday at 1:15 PM against Ellsworth at the Hoisington High School Gym. You can listen to Saturday's game on Classic Hits 95.9 and KRSL.com.Read More Sports
