The Russell girls moved into sole possession of first place in the NCAA league standings with a 51-37 win over Minneapolis on Friday, Jan. 31 at the MHS Gym.

The Lady Broncos led 8-4 at the end of the first quarter and trailed briefly in the second frame before retaking the 23-21 lead at the break. Russell led 35-31 at the end of three and played solid defense down the stretch to pick up the victory.

In the boys game, Russell battled the Lions for three quarters before Minneapolis pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 57-41 victory.

The Broncos trailed at the end of the first quarter by only four points, as the score was 15-11 heading into the second stanza. In the second quarter, Minneapolis saw their lead swell to 35-18 at halftime. Only two of those 15 points in the fourth did not come from the foul line.

Noah Gfeller scored a career-best 12 points for Russell.
