SE-Saline Sweeps Russell

The Russell Lady Broncos lost ground in the race for a regular season league championship Friday, February 21 as they lost 52-46 at Southeast of Saline.

Russell trailed only 15-14 at the end of the first quarter after leading much of the quarter, but went into the halftime break down 30-21. The Lady Broncos saw the Southeast lead grow by two more points, 43-32, through three periods. The Lady Trojans didn't hit a field goal in the fourth quarter, but went nine of 17 from the foul line to seal the victory. Russell went 10 of 17 from the stripe for the entire game.

Janna Schulte led Russell with 14 points. Kyleigh Kasper scored 10.

Erica Montgomery led Southeast of Saline with 17 points. Calli Calahan followed with 15.

Russell drops to 10-9 overall, 7-4 in the NCAA and to a tie with Southeast of Saline for second place in the league standings behind Minneapolis, who is now 8-3 after beating Beloit Friday night.

In the boys game, Russell hung with Southeast of Saline early, but three point shooting from the Trojans gave them a lead midway through the first quarter and they never looked back, cruising to a 64-38 win versus the Broncos.

Russell trailed 17-8 at the end of one and only 33-21 at the break. Southeast of Saline extended its lead in the third period though by hitting three shots from downtown, with the score at 52-30 going into the final quarter. Three more makes from behind the arc in the fourth frame helped the Trojans pick up their 13th win of the season.

For the game, Southeast of Saline hit nine treys. To their credit, Russell nailed four triples, but it wasn't enough.

Jordan Swanson led Russell with 14 points and two threes.

Southeast of Saline was led in scoring by Ben Stutterheim who totaled 20 points and five treys. Kayden Besher scored 11.

Russell falls to 2-17 overall, 0-11 in the NCAA and has lost 15 in-a-row.

The Russell girls and boys will next host Minneapolis on Tuesday night for Senior Night and their last regular season game. The girls game begins at 6 PM with the boys to follow at around 7:45 PM. Listen to both games on Classic Hits 95.9 and KRSL.com.
