Boys: Sacred Heart 57, Russell 35
The Russell girls overcame an ice cold start and beat Sacred Heart 33-19 in NCAA league action on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.
The Lady Broncos were held scoreless in a quarter for the first time this year and trailed 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. But Russell outscored the Knights 10-2 in the second quarter and led 10-5 at halftime. The Lady Broncos took control with a 12-1 run to start the third quarter and pushed their lead to as many as 22 in the fourth quarter.
Kelli Rourke had 11 points to lead Russell. Madison Beagley followed with 10.
The Lady Broncos are now 12-5 overall, 6-3 in the NCAA and have won six of their last seven games.
Jordan Hecker scored 21 points for the RHS boys, but it was not enough as the Broncos lost 57-35 to Sacred Heart.
Russell trailed 11-8 after one quarter and 18-14 midway through the second quarter before the Knights took control. Sacred Heart went on a 14-3 run that stretched over the second and third quarters to go up 32-17 and pulled away for the 22-point victory.
The Broncos fall to 1-16 overall, 0-9 in league play and have lost 15-straight.
Russell hosts league rival Beloit on Friday. It's also Winter Sports Night at RHS. The girls game begins at 6pm with the boys to follow around 7:45pm. The crowning of king and queen will be held between games.
