Boys: Beloit 64, Russell 39
The Russell girls' league title hopes took a big hit after a 51-34 loss to rival Beloit at Amos Morris Gym on Friday, Feb. 10.
Beloit jumped out to a 24-7 lead after the first quarter and the Lady Broncos could not get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Kelli Rourke had 12 points for Russell. Madison Beagley followed with eight and Janna Schulte six.
Russell falls to 12-6 overall and third in the NCAA at 6-4. Beloit is 12-5 overall and atop the NCAA at 8-2.
The Russell boys hung with Beloit until the Trojans took control in the third quarter and won 64-39.
The Broncos held early 5-0 and 7-6 leads. But Beloit came back to grab a 19-13 lead after one quarter. The Trojans outscored Russell 13-8 in the second quarter and led 32-21 at halftime. The Broncos cut the gap to 36-28 midway through the third quarter. Beloit finished the quarter on a 9-3 run to go up 45-31 and pulled away in the fourth.
No Broncos scored double-figures. Tyler Hontz led Russell with nine points. Jordan Hecker had eight. Those two combined for five of Russell's six 3-pointers.
Russell falls to 1-17 overall, 0-10 in league play and has lost 16-straight games.
Russell is off Tuesday and will play at SE-Saline on Friday.
