Boys: Minneapolis 55, Russell 32
The Russell girls closed out the regular-season on a high note with a 45-38 win over Minneapolis on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.
The Lady Broncos led most of the way. Russell was up 15-11 after one quarter, 31-26 at halftime and 34-30 after three quarters. Minneapolis got as close as three twice in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Broncos were able to hold off the Lions.
Russell went 9 of 16 from the foul line, while Minneapolis was just 12 of 29, including 2 of 9 in the fourth quarter.
Kaitlynn Walker scored 13 points to lead the Lady Broncos. Janna Schulte had eight points, Kelli Rourke seven and Madison Beagley six.
Russell is now 14-6 overall and finishes third in the NCAA league standings at 8-4.
In the boys game, Minneapolis used a big run over the second and third quarters to take control and won 55-32.
Russell led 11-10 after one quarter and 14-11 early in the second. Minneapolis took an 18-17 lead late in the first half and then went on a 21-0 run to go up 39-17 and pulled away for their third victory over the Broncos this season.
Jordan Hecker led Russell with 11 points. Brennan Walter had eight points.
Russell is now 1-19 overall and finishes 0-12 in league play.
Russell will compete in the Lyons 3A Sub-State next week. Brackets will be released later today.
