Broncos Trounce Sacred Heart

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team notched a huge early season win at home Friday, September 8 with a 49-7 domination of Sacred Heart, a team Russell hadn't defeated since 2008.

Russell (1-1, 1-1 NCAA) scored first with only 30 seconds left in the opening quarter when cornerback Austin Price intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 12 yard touchdown return. The Broncos led 7-0 after one period.

Price, playing quarterback on offense, hooked up with tight end Brody Whitman for a 15 yard TD pass at the 10:02 mark in the second quarter. The scoring possession was set up by a fumble recovery by Russell linebacker Isaac Guzman. At the 5:08 mark in the second frame, Russell's backup quarterback Cole Schroeder connected with tight end Travis Tammen on a nine yard touchdown pass. That possession was set up by an interception by cornerback Kyler Fritschen. Sacred Heart (1-1, 1-1 NCAA) finally scored with 2:05 left in the first half on a seven yard pass from quarterback David Anderson to running back Kyler Junk. Russell took a 21-7 lead into the halftime break.

Price scampered 86 yards for a touchdown run at the 2:59 mark in the third period and Russell led 28-7 heading into the final frame.

Price capped off a 14 play, 55 yard drive at the 8:47 mark in the fourth quarter with a 10 yard TD run. Bronco running back Glen Law punched in a nine yard touchdown run with 5:46 left in the game. And Russell running back Rhett Pospichal ran 69 yards for a TD with just 2:06 left in the contest.

Bronco kicker Garrett Ewers was perfect on the night, hitting all seven extra point attempts.

After totaling only 80 yards of offense in week one, Russell finished with 416 total yards Friday night, 332 on the ground and 84 through the air.

Price led Russell with 151 yards rushing on 12 carries. He also completed four passes for 67 yards. Price scored two rushing touchdowns and one passing TD.

The Knights totaled 144 yards of offense. Anderson, who passed for nearly 300 yards in week one, was held to 111 yards passing against Russell. Sacred Heart had only 33 yards rushing.

The Russell defense forced three interceptions and had one fumble recovery. Sacred Heart recovered one Russell fumble.

Sacred Heart's quarterback Anderson was pressured all night and Russell's Tammen had three sacks.
