RHS Splits First Round Games at Morris-Stephens

Russell Bronco BasketballLINCOLN-Tiffany Dortland scored 15 points and was one of three Russell players in double figures as the Lady Broncos cruised to a 48-31 victory over Phillipsburg Monday night in the first round of the Morris-Stephens Classic at Lincoln Elementary School.

Russell used an opportunistic offense and suffocating defense to jump out to a 31-8 halftime lead and never look back.  While the Lady Panthers did outscore Russell in the third quarter, the Lady Broncos were never really threatened as they improved to 2-0 on the young season.  Samantha Leiker added 13 points while Jaclyn Schulte coming off Friday's double-double against Ellinwood chipped in with 12.  The Russell Defense was outstanding again forcing 28 turnovers for the second consecutive game.

On the Boys side, early turnovers and Defensive breakdowns proved to be costly as sixth-ranked Phillipsburg pulled away for a 52-34 win earlier Monday evening.  The Broncos hustled early and took a 6-4 lead in the first quarter before the Panthers closed the period with a 9-0 run.  Phillipsburg despite missing one of their top players due to an injury suffered during the Football season, took command in the second quarter outscoring the Broncos 16-3 for a 29-9 halftime lead.  Russell did get to within nine points early in the second half, but the Panthers proved to be too much as they advanced to the semifinals.

Tyler Whipple led the Broncos with 12 points including three 3-pointers while Austin Price added 10 as Russell's record dropped to 1-1.

The Lady Broncos will face Plainville in the Semifinals at Lincoln High School Friday at 7 p.m.  The Lady Cardinals hammered host Lincoln 58-17 in their first round game Monday.  The Russell Boys will tangle with Lincoln in the Consolation Semifinals after the Leopards lost to Plainville 58-27.  Friday's game will be at 8:30 p.m. back at Lincoln Elementary.
