RHS Softball Season Ends with Loss at Regional

BELOIT-The Russell Lady Broncos Softball team saw their 2018 season come to an end Monday afternoon at Lady Trojan Field with an 11-1 loss to Lyons in the first round of the Class 3A Regional.

Lyons jumped in front with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a single and a triple with one out off Lady Bronco starting pitcher Whitney Nuss (5-11).  Nuss avoided further damage by recording a striketout and groundout to end the inning on the next two Lion batters.

Russell (6-14) sliced the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second on an opposite field RBI single by Laren Myers that plated Darian Klee who led off the inning with a single.  The Lady Broncos had a chance to tie the game or take the lead later in the inning but Nuss flew out to center field with runners on second and third.

Lyons (13-8) broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the second and then finished off their victory with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.  The game ended with one out in the bottom of the fifth when the 10-run rule was enforced.  Nuss, in her final game as a Bronco recorded five strikeouts while allowing 15 hits.  Monday's game was also the final appeareance in a Lady Bronco uniform for fellow seniors Abby Cross and Ally Suchy though Suchy did not play in the game.

Lyon's Logan Griffitt scattered six hits in five innings of work and struck out four.  The Lions advanced to Tuesday's semifinal at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of the game played later Monday between Plainville-Stockton and Southeast of Saline.  Beloit, the top seed had a bye and will face the winner of Monday evening's Ellsworth-Minneapolis game in the other semifinal at 3 p.m.  The Championship game is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
