Russell Sr. Legion Finishes 2-2 at Wild West Fest Tourney

2018 Russell American Legion Post 99 Baseball teamThe Russell American Legion Post 99 Senior Baseball team wrapped up regular season play this weekend with a 2-2 record at the Wild West Fest Tournament in Hays.

After wins over Hays AAA and Norton to start the tourney, Russell was knocked out with losses to McCook, Nebraska and Hoisington.

Against McCook, Russell jumped out to a 2-0 lead before McCook rallied to tie the score.  Russell then regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run single by Tanner Rome.  McCook however responded with a three-run rally and hung on for the 5-4 victory.  Wyatt Schumacher was the tough luck losing pitcher despite pitching a complete game for Russell.

Later Saturday, Russell was eliminated from the tournament with an 11-1 loss to Hoisington.  Kyle Farmer started the game and took the loss while relievers Cole Schmidtberger and Rome also saw action.  Rhett Pospichal accounted for the lone Russell tally with a sacrifice fly.

With the regular season in the books, Russell (15-10) turns its attention to the AA Zone Tournament which it will host at the Shaffer Sports Complex.  Russell is the #3 seed and will face #6 Smith Center its first game on July 16 at 6 p.m.  The winner goes up against top seed Marysville at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 17.   The tournament will run through July 19 and the top two teams will advance to the AA State Tournament in Sabetha.
