State Previews: Russell, Wilson Hoping for Big Things

2013 KSHSAA State Basketball LogoThe state high school basketball tournament gets underway Wednesday in seven cities across Kansas.

The Russell girls (18-5) are seeded sixth in the 3A Tournament and open against Caney Valley (20-1) at 4:45pm at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.  The Lady Broncos are making their first trip to state since 1974 and second in school history.  Russell has won five-straight and is led by senior forward Madison Beagley, who averages 16.4 points and 6.3 rebounds, and junior forward Janna Schulte, who averages 9.8 points and 6.4 rebounds.  Caney Valley is making their second-straight trip to state and third in school history.  Last year, the Lady Bullpups lost in the first round.  Caney Valley has won eight-straight since suffering their lone loss to Burlington.  The Lady Bullpups are led by a trio of players.  Senior guard Bethany Barlow averages 17.4 points, sophomore point guard Desiree Nelson 15.0 points and junior foward Makenzie Young 14.9 points.  You can listen to the Russell and Caney Valley game on Classic Hits 95.9 and here on krsl.com.

The Wilson girls (20-2) are the fourth seed in the 1A Div. 2 Tournament and take on Baileyville B&B (20-3) at 4:45pm at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.  The Lady Dragons are making their third appearance at state in fourth years.  In 2011, Wilson finished third.  The Lady Dragons have won 11-straight and are led by senior guard Karlie Steinle, who averages 23.7 points, and junior forward Shania Steinike, who averages 11.1 points.  Baileyville B&B has won eight in-a-row and is led by Laura Sudbeck, who averages 16 points, and Katie Huerter, who averages 9.5 points.  The game will be carried on Russell's Classic Country AM 990 and here on krsl.com.

The semifinal games will be held on Friday and third place and championship games on Saturday.
