RHS Trap Shooting Team Preparing for Second Season

Russell Trap BroncosHigh school trap shooting teams are gaining more and more popularity each year in Kansas. So last year, Russell High School and Black Gold Pheasants Forever partnered to form a new trap shooting team.

More than a dozen boys and girls joined the squad last year and Herb Reid, who coaches the Trap Shooting Broncos and is a member of Black Gold Pheasants Forever, said the first season could not have gone much better.

Reid lost seven shooters from last year's team due to graduation and a new team being formed in Hays. So the first goal this spring is recruitment.

Students in grades 9 through 12 interested in joining the Russell High School trap shooting team can sign up now through March 23. A "Learn to Shoot Trap Day" will be held on March 14 at Lasada Lodge south of Russell. The first team practice is April 1 with the first competition on April 22. The Kansas High School State Trap Shoot is June 13 just outside of Wichita.

Students need to complete a hunter's education course to be on the team. A course will be offered at Lasada Lodge on March 21.
