The Russell County USD 407 Board of Education met Monday evening and voted to hire former Ruppenthal Middle School Principal Gaylon Walter as interim Activities Director at Russell High School.

Walter was the industrial education teacher at both Russell High School and RMS for five years and the middle school principal for 15 years. He also served as the USD 407 Transportation Director.

Prior to moving to Russell, he was the industrial education instructor at Scott County USD 466. He coached football and baseball in both districts.

Walter retired from USD 407 at the end of the 2020-2021 school year and will serve in the interim AD role until the end of the current school year.

Walter replaces Scott Nuss who resigned in November 2021.

Also Monday, the Board elected Kathy Wallert as Board President and new member Joyce Ellis as Vice President.

The 2022-2023 district calendar was approved with the main change being no classes the entire Thanksgiving week.

COVID protocols specific to each school building were also updated and approved.

A bid of more than $62,000 was approved to remove asbestos from Simpson Elementary School before the HVAC project begins.

And, Kevin Swayne with High Plains Farm Credit of Hays presented an $8,000 check to Marcia Gier and Superintendent Shelly Swayne for the FFA and 4-H farm project.
